Re: Bernard Panholzer

Hello Peter. I have some sad and good news. My father, Bernard Panholzer died January 1, 1997 in a St. Louis, Missouri, hospital. He had been suffering for many years from illnesses associated from his many years of smoking cigarettes.

Bernard had served aboard the destroyer the USS Putnam in the Pacific during WWII. Many knew him as a man who had an extraordinary ability - clairvoyance. And would sometimes be able to tell when something bad was going to happen. I saw him twice tell the family that someone had died just before long distance telephone call came in announcing the death of a brother or sister 900 miles away. It was eerie.

My Father's last note to me was in answer to my questions about his father, who according to your information might have committed suicide. He wrote, "I was born in Washington, D.C. in 1922 (December 23) My mother's name was Lillian (Martin) Panholzer. My father and mother had 10 children, of which I was number 10. My father's name was Joseph John Panholzer. My younger sister, Josephine told me my mother died two weeks after I was born.

Raymond, Lillian, Paul, Mary, Andrew, Josephine. Two brothers and a sister died before I was two. My father died of a stroke in the spring or fall of 1943. He did not commit suicide. The Joseph referred to in the info of "The Panholzers of North America" was not my father. My father was of Washington, D.C. not of Maryland. My mother was from Baltimore, Maryland.

I do not know how they met. He came to America from Vienna, Austria, to keep from getting in the Austrian army. He came to Chicago where he had a brother living. Then he came to Washington area."

Don't know if any of this helps you. I am a little confused by a statement my cousin Andrew (Sonny) Panholzer told me. Sonny is the son of Andrew Panholzer, my uncle. Sonny told me that he had met my Grandfather and that he was despondent but this would have been after 1943 because Sonny is only a few years older than I. He lives in the Orlando, Florida, area.
